How to drive the Classic VW Campervans

Engine Care/Driving

a. Although our campers have been restored and have everything your need for a great holiday the engine is still an original 1600cc or 2000cc. Keep the speed down the top speed is 55 mph – these campers were built in the 1970s when vehicles were very different! You will find the gears and brakes very different to modern cars and it is advisable to leave lots of space and allow lots of time for braking and gear changing. Don’t let your camper struggle up hills.

b. If there is damage or breakdown caused by your own actions, you will be liable for the cost of repair/replacement and the cost of a professional report (if the fault is not your own you will not be charged for this report). This could be such things as pushing the engine too hard, or putting diesel in a petrol engine, or burning out the clutch. This list is not exhaustive. You must take all reasonable and practicable steps to properly and safely maintain the camper including regular checks on; batteries, engine oil and other gauges, bulbs and tyre pressures and condition when driven more than 500 miles, refilling or replacing as necessary.

3. If you cause damage to the engine through driving too fast (over 55 mph) over too long a period of time, and ignoring the warning lights, you will be liable for any transport costs, repairs required or even the cost of a replacement engine.

Payments and Charges
You must confirm the availability of your chosen vehicle with us at the time of booking. A booking is only fully confirmed once a non-returnable booking deposit has been received, at which point your confirmation email will be sent.

The balance of the hire charges must then be paid at least 6 weeks before hire commences.

Should booking occur within 4 weeks of the date that hire is due to commence, the full hire charges will be payable immediately upon booking, and upon receipt the confirmation email will be sent.

Payment of the hire charges is debit card, credit card or Paypal.

Cancellation Charges
In the event of a cancellation the following applies:

Should you cancel your booking between the time of confirmed reservation and 6 weeks before hire commences, the non-refundable booking deposit if forfeited

Should you cancel your booking between 6 weeks and 2 weeks of your hire commencing you will lose 50% of the hire charges.

Should cancellation occur within 2 weeks of the date that hire is due to commence, you will lose 100% of the hire charges.

However should we manage to get another booking in your place for the same vehicle/vehicles for the same rental period we will waive the cancellation fee but will retain the booking deposit.

If you arrive with incorrect proof of identity documentation and driving licences and you are unable to provide alternative proof of identity documentation for the insurers you will forfeit your hire charges.

Your Security Deposit
A £500.00 security deposit is payable before hire can commence (this may increase if you have any endorsement, points, foreign licence or had an accident). This is to cover the security excess and any potential damage caused to the vehicle (whether negligent, wilful, accidental or otherwise). This deposit is fully refundable upon the return of the vehicle, provided the vehicle and any accessories are delivered on time and in the same condition as when they left and upon a satisfactory inspection by ourselves. This must include a full tank of fuel.

The deposit will be refunded to you within 7 days of these conditions being met.

If there is any damage to the interior/exterior of the vehicle and/or the accessories and these exceed the security deposit, you will be liable for settling these additional costs.

In the first instance any damages to the interior or exterior will be taken from your security deposit.

Late return

If you return the camper outside normal business hours, you must comply with the out of hours return instructions, in which case you will remain fully responsible for the camper until the return location re-opens for business. If you fail to comply with these instructions, you will remain responsible for the camper until we are able to access it.
If at any time we have agreed that you may return the camper to a place other than our premises, or if we have agreed to collect it, you will remain fully responsible for the camper until it is collected by us or the AA. You are responsible for any costs incurred in returning the camper to our premises should you abandon the vehicle.

We will not refund the hire charge if the camper is returned prior to the return date due to weather, personal circumstances or any other reason whatsoever.

Cleaning
As part of the hire agreement you are expected to sweep out any debris in the campervan and wipe down all internal surfaces before returning the vehicle.

You also agree to bring the camper van back in a condition that is not unreasonably dirty on the outside.

You agree we are entitled to charge you an additional cost, if the camper requires more than our standard cleaning on it’s return, to restore it to the its pre-rental condition. Please DO NOT use an automated car wash or pressure washer as this can damage the paintwork and fittings.
